We all know that one coworker, ya know, that one. Maybe the one that leaves all the leftovers in the fridge too long, or they chew with their mouth open, or they’re always leaving early. It’s important to be on the other side of that spectrum and have the “coworker halo” floating over your head. Here are some tips on how to get to that status.

Dependable

When you say you’re gonna do it, do it. If you say you’re going to be there at 9:00 AM, then be there at 8:50 AM. Taking the lead on a big project? Then take the lead. Whether you’re a coworker or skin, being flakey is never a good trait to have. By being someone that can be counted on, you are allowing your coworkers to build trust with you, and being dubbed “the dependable one”.

Flexible

Whether you can touch your toes, or you can move your 1:00 PM meeting to 2:15 PM, working with a team of coworkers requires some flexibility. Different schedules, random pop-ups, and emergencies are often not predicted but do occur. Rolling with the punches, allowing for changes, and keeping your cool about them, will dub you as “the flexible one”.

Appreciative

You know how everyone has that one pet peeve? The thing that just turns you off from someone as soon as they do or don’t do it? Mine is manners. Do you appreciate something that your coworker did for you? Then say “thank you”! The science behind this one is simple: if you make someone feel appreciated, they will continue to help you. Small tokens of gratitude, a Crumbl cookie, or a simple “thank you”, will get you dubbed as “the appreciative one”.

Prompt

The most valuable asset that someone has; time. I can promise that you don’t want to be the person that messes with that. Whether it be coming into work, a meeting, or a deadline that has to be met, it’s important to be conscious of not only other’s time but your own. Turning in that blog on time, being early to a meeting, and getting to work 5 minutes early, are all things that will dub you “the prompt one”.

Share Resources That Others Might Find Helpful

On a team, you should all have a common goal, contribute to a successful company! If you find articles, tips & tricks, a faster way to process information, etc. Share that information with your team and allow everyone to be on the same page. While different people may find different things to be considered helpful, by including your team, you’ll be dubbed “the helpful one”.

Bring Treats

The heartbeat of our office, food. Who doesn’t like to come into a meeting with an assortment of pastries waiting for you? Maybe the afternoon pick me up of a Starbucks brownie? Now, you don’t always have to be the one bringing in the goods, however, every once in a while, a surprise and a sign of appreciation is always welcomed and noticed by other staff members (until you start making them gain some pounds). It’s never a bad thing to be dubbed “the one with the treats”.
