A New York Times Bestselling phenomenon, Where the Crawdad’s Sings turns a coming of age story into the book you didn’t know you needed in your life. Between falling in love with the “Marsh Girl”, an ode to nature, and a possible murder, you won’t be able to put this one down!
1. What initially drew you to read this book?
McCall: “It was referred by someone in the office who had already ready it.”
Katie: “Everyone I knew highly recommended this book and I too, believe it’s a must-read!”
2. Would you recommend this book to someone else? Why or why not?
McCall: “Oh my gosh, yes! I’ve already recommended this addiction, I’m not even sure how many times. A great change of pace from the books that I typically read.”
Katie: “Absolutely! I loved Delia Owens’ writing style throughout this book. She painted pictures with her words that allowed me to get lost in the story.”
3. Who would you recommend reads this kind of book?
McCall: “Someone who enjoys intellectual reading, and really analyzing a story. There’s an untold amount of symbolism and understanding the character and setting. Along with that, someone who can “escape” easily in a book would enjoy the read.”
Katie: “If you are looking for a moving, caring, emotional and suspenseful novel, this book is for you.”
4. What do you believe is the correlation between the book title and the story?
McCall: “With the crawdads living in the marsh, and that being the location where the story takes place, I believe it was the author’s way of showcasing the marsh and the symbolism it plays in the story.”
Katie: “Crawdads only sing when they are in complete isolation deep in the marsh. A quote from the book, “Please don’t talk to me about isolation. No one has to tell me how it changes a person. I have lived it. I am isolation,” Kya whispered with a slight edge.” – Delia Owens. Another quote that correlates the title and the story is when Kya’s Ma always encouraged her to explore the marsh: “Go as far as you can — way out yonder where the crawdads sing.” This allowed Kya to be the well known author of the marsh publications and create a career out of the world she loves.”
5. Were there any quotes from the book that really stuck out to you?
McCall: “That’s what sisters and girlfriends are all about. Sticking together even in the mud, ’specially in mud.”
Katie: “Time is no more fixed than the stars. Time speeds and bends around planets and suns, is different in the mountains than in the valleys, and is part of the same fabric as space, which curves and swells as does the sea.”
Overall Score:
McCall: 5/5
Katie: 5/5
