1. What initially drew you to read this book?

McCall: “It’s a bestseller and everyone whose read it said it was great. Boy, they were not wrong!”

Katie: “It was recommended by one of our Book Club members. After reading reviews, it was something completely different from what our club has read in the past.”

2. Would you recommend this book to someone else? Why or why not?

McCall: “100%. I already have more than once. It’s such a heartfelt story that experiences every emotion- from love, loss, sacrifice, dignity, fear, shame, and everything in between.”

Katie: “Absolutely! This opened my eyes to have a better understanding of what others go through in life just to survive. It caused me to be so grateful for the life that I have, even on my worst days.”

3. Who would you recommend reads this kind of book?

McCall: “Anyone who is interested in a very realistic, life-like experience of hardship, sacrifice, hope, and victory. Also, anyone who thinks they hate this country that they currently live in… It could be eye-opening to see what many others in the world are calling a “normal life”.”

Katie: “Anyone that believes or doesn’t believe in our American immigration system. Anyone looking for insight on what the other side of the border goes through and why they “have” to leave and come to the United States. It will question what is right and wrong when allowing humans into a country that just might save their lives.”

4. What do you believe is the correlation between the book title and the story?

McCall: “The journey and safety that American dirt represents.”

Katie: “The story of immigrants risking their lives to reach “American Dirt” in hopes of a better life. A life that isn’t being threatened by abuse, rape, and murder.”

5. Were there any quotes from the book that really stuck out to you?

McCall: “For all her love of words, at times they’re entirely insufficient.”

Katie: “She’d hoped, like one of those desert rattlesnakes, to shed the skin of her anguish and leave it behind her in the Mexican dirt.”

McCall: 5/5
