Don’t know what a GDS is? Or a POP Report? No worries, my friends. Your handy dandy jargon list (don’t worry, jargon is on the list) has arrived, to save the day! When stepping into the promo and event world there is a slew of terminology to know. To get you started, here a few terms from our Lip Glossary:
Amenities: an additional facility or feature of a place or building.
Brand Ambassador: an individual who represents a brand.
Consumer Show: large scale showing of different products, inventions, or prototypes.
Day of Event Menu (DOE Menu): a menu that is offered to order off of during an event.
Emcee: the official host of a ceremony, stage event, or conference.
Facilities: an amenity, place, or equipment that can be provided for a specific purpose
Global distribution system (GDS): a network used to facilitate transactions between travel industry services (airlines, hotels, rental car services, travel agencies, etc.).
Hospitality: a friendly and generous relationship between a host and guest, where the guest receives some sort of goodwill.
Industry: a specific sector that produces goods or services for the economy.
Jargon: terminology used specifically within a certain field.
Keynote Speaker: specific speaker used to build up audiences, and help them think about certain topics.
Load-In: unloading items from their form of transportation and placing them within the venue.
Mark-up: the price difference between the selling price of a good or service and the cost.
No-show: a person who does not show up for a booking, appointment, or reservation.
Occupancy Rate: the ratio between the rented or used spaced compared to the total amount of space available.
Proof of Performance Report (POP Report): documentation showing that a job has been completed.
Quote: an estimated price for a good or service.
Run of Show: a line-by-line sequence of events that will happen within a showtime period.
Signage: commercial, public, or directional displays.
Talent: anyone who is working an event with public attendance.
Umbrella Policy: liability insurance that is in excess of other policies in place.
Venue: location where an organized event such as a sporting event, concert, etc. take place.
Walk-Through: rehearsal or perusal of an event already taking place or possibly taking place.
Xenial: hospitality or relations between a guest and their host.
Year to Date: time period starting from the beginning of “your year” to the present day.
Z– racks: garment rack on wheels.
